In the depression era Betty Boop was even more popular than she is today, and many would go to the theatres to see betty in a short cartoon. Helen Kane a popular actress during the drepression had a very similar hairstyle and way of speaking to the Betty Boop character, so much so they she actually sued the Paramount studios, the company that made the Betty Boop character for diluting her persona.

Paramount was relieved to have won the case when it was revealed that Helen Kane actually developed her on stage character after the hair style, dress and speach of Baby Esther another performer of that era.
